If you happen to be in Berlin, and if you only have time for one exhibition: go to Kunst Werke and see Wael Shawky’s exhibition which fills all the floors. I’ve known Wael since 2002 when we worked together in Cairo, later on we had a residency in 2004 during the same time at Platform, Istanbul, we are good friends and naturally I follow his career closely – and it is moving up like a divers’ fart, like my partner would say. I met him twice before this year, in Kassel at the documenta opening where he exhibited two pieces, and in Dubai where he received the Aabraj Art Prize. Not only is he an artist with enormous integrity, but he also manages to formulate his own territory in the art world. See it!
